RSC Services

Overview

The JISC Regional Support Centre (RSC) exists to enable learning providers to realise the opportunities created by new technologies. We provide a wide variety of services on an individual and sector-wide basis for the Learning and Skills sector in Wales.

Our service is for identified learning providers within the Learning and Skills Sector in Wales, including Further Education, Adult and Community Learning, Voluntary Learning, Offender Learning and Work Based Learning providers. It also extends to some Higher Education organisations, and the Specialist College Sector. The RSC supports strategic managers, operational managers and practitioners responsible for:

  • learning and teaching
  • curriculum
  • staff development
  • quality
  • technical infrastructure
  • library/learning resources
  • business support

Managers
We advise managers and those responsible for organisational transformation on the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning provision and to support core business functions. We can offer advice and support on topics such as:
  • technology to aid collaboration and transformation
  • technology and quality
  • learner expectations
  • staff development planning and delivery
  • technology in new build and refurbishment projects
  • embedding the use of technology throughout the organisation.
In addition, a number of services are available such as:
Learning Resource Services
We can offer advice and support on topics such as:
  • finding, integrating and promoting e-resources: quality websites, teaching resources, e-journals, e-books, online databases
  • creating a Moodle / VLE presence for the Learning Resources Service (LRS) and integrating its services
  • Web 2.0 for the LRS
  • information literacy and reader development: using e-learning tools to support the delivery of information skills training. Examples may include developing online information literacy resources (e.g. using screencasts or learning objects), integrating resources into the curriculum, finding and using free information literacy resources
  • library catalogues / library management systems
  • access management for e-resources
  • other LRS technology such as PC booking systems, voting systems / clickers or other e-learning tools for inductions and teaching.
As well as welcoming individual queries (our contact details are here), we also post to our blog, update our delicious account and add new LR topics to the RSC Wales online information and resources area. Links to all these resources can be found on our Netvibes hub.
Learning Technologists
For learning technologists we can do the following:
  • circulate information on the latest news and developments in the field of technologies relevant to teaching and learning via our website news, blogs, and online information and resources area
  • signpost relevant tools / resources that can be used to support teaching and learning via our online information and resources area, website and blogs
  • facilitate discussions (face to face and online) between those with similar interests / concerns, for example via the Learntech Wales Jiscmail list and the Moodle Wales User Group
  • demonstrate technologies and how they can be used in a teaching and learning environment
  • provide opportunities for supported 'experimentation' with new technologies
  • work in partnership with expert agencies to provide information and support in the use of technology to improve accessibility and inclusion
  • offer access to relevant events, workshops and conferences - see the Events section of our website.

Technical Staff
We can advise on:

Staff Developers

RSC Wales works with staff development managers and learning technology staff to devise effective staff development programmes to enable organisations to deliver effective CPD opportunities for their staff.

Teacher Trainers / ITT
RSC Wales has been working with ITT departments across Wales. We can:
  • advise teacher educators on approaches to technology enhanced learning in accordance with new LLUK standards and minimum core
  • provide exemplar material and resources, including our online "Using e-Learning in Teaching" area
  • disseminate timely information, via our ITT-Wales-Post16 email list.

Teachers
RSC Wales can:
  • advise teachers on approaches to technology enhanced learning in accordance with new teacher training standards and minimum core
  • provide exemplar material / resources (including our "Using e-Learning in Teaching" area)
  • inform of the latest news and developments in the field of technologies relevant to teaching and learning via our website news, blog, and  online information and resources area
  • signpost relevant tools/resources that can be used to support teaching and learning
  • facilitate discussions (face to face and online) between those with similar interests / concerns
  • demonstrate technologies and how they can be used in a teaching and learning environment
  • provide opportunities for supported 'experimentation' with new technologies
  • offer access to relevant events, workshops, conferences - see the Events section of our website.
Learners
RSC Wales can provide opportunities for learners to share their thoughts and ideas on specific uses of technology to enhance their learning. This might be related to, (but is not restricted to):
  • learning space design
  • handheld / mobile technologies
  • learner expectations
  • social networking
  • e-safety.
Higher Education
RSC Wales works directly with providers of Higher Education in Wales to ensure that the opportunities created by the development of new learning technologies can be realised. We offer Information Learning Technology advice and guidance on topics such as strategic development and implementation, staff development and learning resources. This support is delivered by:
  • working with managers to identify opportunities to use technologies, and to design appropriate strategies
  • helping organisations to identify staff development needs and then brokering or providing training
  • celebrating and disseminating good practice via workshops and conferences
  • disseminating information on resources and events via our email list and blog.

Partnerships
RSC Wales builds an understanding with JISC Advisory Services and other partners on how to best promote that service to the community. For example, RSC Wales runs local and regional courses and events on accessibility issues, in collaboration with JISC TechDis.
