IT Advisory Services
Network Management
- Offer assistance supporting institutions with the running of externally
facing DNS and E-mail servers including advice, implementation and on-going
development of anti-spam and anti-virus techniques, and integration with
existing e-mail systems.
- Provide an advisory service on the running of firewalls and broker any
training required.
- Offer assistance to supported institutions with the management of their
site access routers and/or perimeter firewalls.
- Assist colleges in maintaining secure and reliable networks, by making
penetration testing and network monitoring tools available, and by performing
regular external penetration tests.
- Promote the use of the JANET Services.
- Provide advice and guidance on user authentication technology, either
via RADIUS for network authentication or Shibboleth for content authentication.
- Support and monitor developments with the All Wales Public Sector Network
(AWPSN), and lead the migration of supported learning providers onto that
network.
Learning Technologies Technical Support
- Make available technical support to supported institutions in running
the Open Source Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle, and will endeavour
to work with supported institutions in their deployment of their chosen
VLE system.
- Provide guidance and assistance for institutions in preparing and implementing
Shibboleth and joining the UK’s access management federation, as
well as maintaining assistance on the use of Athens.
Network Technical Diagnostic Support
By
improving management and monitoring of institutions networks with open source
monitoring systems RSC Wales aim to assist institutions in performing some
of their own initial diagnostics work, but will perform initial and further
diagnostics work, where it is required. Where an issue becomes complex,
or where a situation requires it, the RSC will conduct a site visit to assist.
